As a
fanatic reader and book blogger I loved reading book discussions. And since I
also love having my own book blog I decided to post a book discussion myself.
So join me on my little book discussion journey and let’s have some fun!
and book blogger I read about many different characters. Just as in real-life,
some characters I like, and some I definitely don’t like as much. Nothing surprising
there probably. But does it change your view of a book if you don’t like the
character as much? For example, would I have liked Harry Potter as much as I do
now if I disliked Harry’s character?
something I’ve been thinking about lately since I recently read a book in which
I disliked the characters very much. Well.. I just thought they were awful
really! But the story itself had potential and I found myself feeling sorry for
not enjoying this book as much as I probably would have with a different
character.
this really possible? Is a book not great or bad because of the characters?
Well.. I think I can say that I don’t necessary have to like the characters to
enjoy a book. If the scene and the world in which a book takes place is just so
good and well developed, I can even dislike the characters and still like the
book. For example ‘Gone Girl’ by Gillian Flynn. I hated both characters. Horrible
really! But I thought the book was very thrilling and it kept me hooked till
the very last page.
if I enjoy the story, without liking the characters I still think a book that
has characters you love or just like is much easier to enjoy. At least for me.
Feeling like I like the characters, and can sometimes even connect with them
makes me love a book even more. It’s the complete experience about a book that
makes me love it.
do you think? Do you have to like the character to enjoy the book you read?

This is always such a hard question. I agree that I can dislike the characters and still like a book, but it very much depends and is different from book to book. There are some times when I've disliked characters but liked the book because everything about it was so good. Other times I've disliked them and, because of that, I disliked the book. Then there are times when I dislike who a character is as a person, but I find them interesting as a character!
Yes, this is definitely a question that keeps me thinking. But I agree it depends on the book. Sometimes it doesn't really matter if I like the character. But other times it really matters and I just can't like the book.
Thanks for stopping by! 😉
I do believe it depends on the book. I think sometimes having an unlikable main character is part of the book like in The Magicians by Lev Grossman – I cannot stand the main character, but I still love the book.
And I did have books that I couldn't like because of how much I disliked the main characters.
I am not sure if it's us being subjective, or if the author's aim to have an unlikable character helps you enjoy the book even if you don't like the hero.
Hmm.. good point. Maybe we should ask the authors this question. 🙂 It definitely depends on the book. Sometimes the book is good, I just have to like it even if the characters are terrible.

I've knocked off books because I couldn't stand characters. Treasured Dreams was my most recent one. I so wanted to finish the trilogy, and I just could not get past the continuous focus on Nox, the antagonist. It was worse than the first two books and I just had to stop reading. I also couldn't get through Great Expectations because of Pip. However, there have been other books where I disliked a character and still enjoyed the book, like Harry Potter. There were times I didn't like Harry or Ron. I think it really does depend on the book and how the author has crafted each character and their relationships.
Sorry to hear you had to stop reading. But unfortunately I know what you mean. There have been books where I just couldn't get over the characters I didn't like and just had to stop reading.
