Girton
Club-Foot, apprentice to the land’s best assassin, still has much to learn
about the art of taking lives. But their latest mission tasks him and his
master with a far more difficult challenge: to save a life. Someone, or many
someones, is trying to kill the heir to the throne, and it is up to Girton and
his master to uncover the traitor and prevent the prince’s murder.

In a
kingdom on the brink of civil war and a castle thick with lies Girton finds
friends he never expected, responsibilities he never wanted, and a conspiracy
that could destroy an entire land.

Set in a
world ravaged by magic and the ambition of noblemen, this debut epic fantasy
features a cast of assassins, knights and fools which will delight any fan of
Brent Weeks, David Dalglish or Robin Hobb.

My Review:

A view
years back I loved reading fantasy novels. But lately I haven’t been reading a
lot of fantasy. Not for any particular reason really. I did read a view fantasy
novels that I didn’t really like all that much, but I had that with other
genres too. So when I received ‘Age of Assassins’, I was super excited to start
reading.

‘Age of
Assassins’ is the first book in The Wounded Kingdom series and I was very
curious about what kind of  book this
would end up being. I mean, if you read the word Assassin you get some kind of
idea right? I immediately thought of the Assassin game my husband used to play
on the PlayStation. And I loved the book cover. I really think it’s pretty and
kind of mysterious.

In ‘Age of
Assassins’ we meet young apprentice Girton. Girton is the apprentice of the
land’s best assassin and he hasn’t been away from her for long. But this time
they have a mission that is different than the previous once, and leaves Girton
working on his own more. Now Girton and his Master have to save a life.

It took me
a long time to really get into this book. Not that it was difficult to read,
but it just didn’t really ‘grab’ me. And I honestly didn’t really got into this
book at all. And I don’t think it was the book or the writing, but just the
genre that just doesn’t really interest me as much as it did once. There is
lots of mystery and great storytelling in this book. And it surprised me that
this book is the author’s first book.

Although
this book wasn’t really for me, I was impressed by the way the author was able
to leave these clues throughout the pages. I had multiple times where I thought
thinks would go a certain way, and then I didn’t go like that at all. Very
impressive, and definitely a great way to write a mysterious fantasy novel.

Especially
as a first book in a series, ‘Age of Assassins’ was a nice read. But I just
couldn’t really connect with the story. But I definitely think, if you like
fantasy stories this book could be something for you.

About the Author:

RJ Barker
lives in Leeds with his wife, son and a collection of questionable taxidermy, odd
art, scary music and more books than they have room for. He grew up reading whatever
he could get his hands on, and has always been ‘that one with the book in his
pocket.’ Having played in a rock band before deciding he was a rubbish musician
RJ returned to his first love, fiction, to find he is rather better at that. As
well as his debut epic fantasy novel, Age of Assassins, RJ has written short
stories and historical scripts which have been performed across the country. He
has the sort of flowing locks any cavalier
would be proud of.
