As a fanatic reader and book blogger I loved reading book discussion. And since I also love having my own book blog I decided to post a book discussion myself. So join me on my little book discussion journey and let’s have some fun!

Last week
I read a book that had all the great aspects of things I love in a read. But
somehow I just couldn’t really love the story. The reason was the two main
characters. I just didn’t love them. I honestly think I didn’t like the story
as much as I predicted because I didn’t really knew the characters. There wasn’t
much character development and I started wondering what it really is that makes
me love characters.
I think
the answer to that question is knowledge. I really need to get to know
characters to really get them and fall in love with them. For example the
Christian Grey character of the Fifty Shades series. In the first book he
really just looks and sounds like a pig who gets off on hurting females. But
there’s this mystery about him that makes you want to keep on reading, and in
the second and third book we really get to know why he is the way he is. And
now he is one of my favorite male characters.
That is of
course not an example all readers can relate too so let me explain by using
another character: Hermione Granger. In the beginning of the first book in the
Harry Potter series Hermione is this know-it-all who really doesn’t really
sound all that sympathetic. But when you read the book, and all the other books
in the series you get to see that Hermione isn’t only brilliant, but cares a
lot about the people she’s close too, stands up for the things she’s passionate
about and will break the rules to protect and help her friends. She really is
one of the greatest book characters out there if you ask me.
But
sometimes I don’t really know a character at all but still love them. Think of
Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games. She always kind of stayed a mystery to
me. Sure we know that she is tough, and would sacrifice herself for the people
she loves. But do we really know what she loves? What she thinks? What she
would do if the world she lived in wasn’t so crazy? I don’t really know the
answers to those questions regarding Katniss Everdeen, but I still love her.
Maybe it’s
the vibe a character has about her/him. Maybe it’s just the way the character
acts.

What do you
think? What makes you love a book character? What makes you think a book character is great?
