Blog Tour ‘Bite’ by Nick Louth

Today I’m excited to participate in the Blog Tour of ‘Bite’
by Nick Louth. ‘Bite’ is a thriller that was first published in 2007 and it’s
now available with a beautiful new cover.

A view weeks ago I received ‘Bite’ by Nick Louth. I’ve
never heard of this author before but when I saw the beautiful cover by Piatkus
and read where the story was about, I was really excited to start reading it.

In ‘Bite’ we meet Max and Erica. Erica is a young scientist
who is about to present her work, on a conference in Amsterdam, about a revolutionary
defense against a deadly tropical decease. Max is an sculptor who is madly in
love with Erica. After Max and Erica spend a lovely day in Amsterdam, Max is
sure this woman in the love of his life. But when Erica suddenly vanishes in
the middle of the night before she can present her work on the conference, Max
is desperate to find her. When the police isn’t too eager to help him out, Max
decides to do anything is his power to find her himself. But there are things Max
didn’t know about Erica.  

Since I never read a book by Nick Louth before, I was
really excited to read this book. The headlines on the book cover are very promising:
‘The most gripping thriller you’ll ever read’. So off course I started reading
with high expectations.

The beginning of this book was very gripping. Honestly,
the beginning is like every thriller should begin. Its mysterious, immediately makes
you wonder about the rest of the book and it makes you want to read further. I
got really excited about the book through those first four pages.

The most interesting thing about this book is that you
get to read the present, and entries from Erica’s journal from years ago. I
definitely enjoyed this part from the book. Although I expected early on that
these journal entries where a part of what made her disappear right now, it’s
definitely interesting to read and never bored me.

The thing I found a little confusing where the many
characters that where described at the beginning of the book. There were some
chapters about these other character, but I didn’t really get why they were
there. It didn’t make this book more or less interesting, and it was a little
confusing to remember all the names and which role the where supposed to play.

Obviously, as a Dutch girl, I really liked that this book
took place in Amsterdam. I’ve been to Amsterdam many many times, and my parents
are both born there, so I know a lot about that city. Reading about Amsterdam
definitely made this book fun for me. Although it did, especially in the beginning,
sound like all Amsterdam was really about is the Red Light District. And I
promise you, Amsterdam is so much more.

Concluding, I didn’t find this book ‘The most gripping
thriller you’ll ever read’, but I did enjoy it. This book was very informative,
well researched and it kept me want to keep reading. But the main character Max
didn’t really get to me. I found his character a little strange. One minute he’s
this sculptor desperate to find his missing girlfriend, the next he is this
retired ‘superhero’ with some attitude problems. This just didn’t fit the story
if you ask me.

So I enjoyed the book, but it didn’t ‘WOW’ me. 

Nick Louth is a bestselling thriller writer,
award-winning financial journalist and an investment commentator. A 1979
graduate of the London School of Economics, he went on to become a Reuters
foreign correspondent in 1987. It was an experience at a medical conference in
Amsterdam in 1992, while working for Reuters, that gave him the inspiration for
Bite, which was a self-published bestseller in 2014. Freelance since 1998, he
has been a regulator contributor to the Financial Times, Investors Chronicle
and Observer Money section, and has published seven other books. Nick Louth is
married and lives in Lincolnshire.
