York Times best
selling author Kim Harrison returns to her beloved Hollows
series with The Turn, the official prequel to the series that will introduce
you to a whole new side of Rachel Morgan’s world as they’ve never seen it
before!

Can science save us when all else fails?

Trisk and her hated rival, Kal, have the same goal: save their species from
extinction.

But death comes in the guise of hope when a genetically modified tomato created
to feed the world combines with the government’s new tactical virus, giving it
an unexpected host and a mode of transport. Plague rises, giving the paranormal
species the choice to stay hidden and allow humanity to die, or to show
themselves in a bid to save them.

Under accusations of scientific misconduct, Trisk and Kal flee across a
plague-torn United States to convince leaders of the major paranormal species
to save their supposedly weaker kin, but not everyone thinks humanity should be
saved, and Trisk fights the prejudices of two societies to prove that not only
does humanity have something to offer, but that long-accepted beliefs against
women, dark magic, and humanity itself can turn to understanding; that when
people are at their worst that the best show their true strength, and that love
can hold the world together as a new balance is found.

My Review:

When I was first offered a review cover of ‘The Turn’ by Kim Harrison, I
was surprised to learn there was already a series out there I didn’t know
about. I read a view reviews from different readers and Kim Harrison’s Hollows
series supposedly was this great read. Why on earth didn’t I hear about it
before?
I first started reading ‘The Turn’ a view months back when I was right
in the middle of our wedding preparations, and I just couldn’t get into this
read. I heard so many great things about ‘The Turn’, that it really frustrated
me to not be able to get into it. So I decided to put it on the side for a
little while, and read it again when my mind was not so busy with everything
else going on in my life.
Since this book is the prequel to the Hollows series, this one was a
good one to get started with the series. And I must admit that it again took me
some time to get into the story and the different characters and creatures. But
this time, I was able to keep on going, and slowly on I began to like this
story more and more.
In ‘ The Turn’ we meet Trisk, a female doctor who has to work hard for
everything she’s got. Especially as a female scientist and a elf. Now Trisk is
working besides her ‘human’ colleague, to make sure everything he makes doesn’t
have a bad effect on elfs, witches and weres. But then something goes terrible
wrong and a deathly virus threatens to kill all humans.
Like I said before it took me a little while to get into this story, and
to figure out what kind of book this really was. The main character Trisk, is a
strong character I really came to like. She had a rough time as a woman and
being a scientist, but she stayed strong through it all and managed to stand
her own. I loved that about her.
What I didn’t get was her relationship with Kalamack. They had this rivalry
which I didn’t really got, and in the end they also had this kind of romance
part which was just confusing for me.
I really enjoyed the whole journey in this book in which Trisk, and her colleague
Daniël tried to help all the humans and stop the virus. It was really exciting
to read about their adventures and it definitely kept me on the edge of my
seat.
Although I didn’t love this book as much as I hoped I did, it still was
a very enjoyable read and it made me curious about the other books in this
series. I’m definitely going to read the next book in the Hollows series.
