As a professional football player, I had a playbook for everything on the field. Then I retired and found out there’s no playbook for life—especially when the one you thought was perfect gets flipped upside down.
There’s no play for suddenly becoming a divorced, single dad. There’s no plan for moving your family back to the town you grew up in.
And there is definitely not a play for falling in love with the nanny.
I didn’t mean to. Betsy Sullivan just has that way about her.
It started with wanting to see her smile. It grew to needing to hear her laugh.
Before I knew it, her red lips and perfect curves were all I could think about. And I started to picture a life together - A perfect life together. Except nothing is ever perfect. Nothing is how you envision it. I learned that hard lesson once already.
And if I’m not careful, I might find myself learning it again. I shouldn’t want her. My head knows that. My heart doesn’t seem to care.
Neither does hers.

One of my favorite things to do is reading books by author’s I haven’t read anything from before. So when I read the book description of ‘The One I Want’, I knew this was a book I wanted to try. Luckily enough I received an ARC not much later and started reading right away.

In ‘The One I Want’ we meet Wes and Betsy. Wes is a professional football player and has just announced his retirement. Everything seems great, but when Wes comes home he finds out his wife packed her bags and is leaving him and their three kids. Now he has to find his way with being a single dad, a single man and a football player playing his last professional games. The last thing Wes expected was to meet Betsy.

Betsy is still trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. After countless of unsuccessful jobs she is tired of the disappointments. So she moves to a small town where her best friend lives. Soon after moving into her new home, she meets these adorable three young kids and their handsome dad. The last thing she expected was to be offered a job as nanny. But somehow this seems like the perfect opportunity. Soon Betsy learns that she loved her new job. And being around Wes isn’t that horrible either.

‘The One I Want’ was definitely a cute and fun read. I loved the two main characters Wes and Betsy. We get to read this book through both their point of views, which was great and made me love them both. From the moment Wes and Betsy meet, there is this instant chemistry between them. Everyone could see it, and I loved that. Obviously they didn’t act on their feelings at first, since there where kids involved.. but they were just inevitable.

Next to a fun romance, I loved reading about the small town of Rolling Hills. I’ve always had a thing about small town romances.. and this town was definitely great. I loved how Wes was supported by his friends and family and how everyone took care of each other. I had some trouble keeping all the friends, siblings and cousins apart to be honest, but that’s something I always have trouble with.

And then their were Wes’s kids. Those three kids where amazing! I loved reading those moments that involved the kids. Especially the oldest Emerson. She was something else!

‘The One I Want’ was a very enjoyable read. I loved the characters and the setting. If your looking for a fun romance, this one is definitely for you.

About Chelle Sloan

Known for her witty sense of humor, Chelle Sloan is a former sports reporter who recently completed her master's degree in journalism, and is now putting that to good use — one happily ever after at a time.

An Ohio native, she’s fiercely loyal to Cleveland sports, is the owner of way too many — yet not enough — tumblers and will be a New Kids on the Block fan until the day she dies. She does her best writing at Starbucks, where you can usually find a Pink Drink within reach. Oh, and yes, you probably saw her on TikTok.

As for her own happily every after? Maybe one day...
