My dear Miss Bridgerton, We have been corresponding now for quite some time, and although we have never formally met, I feel as if I know you. Forgive me if I am too bold, but I am writing to invite you to visit me. It is my hope that we might decide that we will suit, and you will consent to be my wife. —Sir Phillip Crane Sir Phillip Crane knew that Eloise Bridgerton was a spinster, and so he’d proposed, figuring that she’d be homely and unassuming, and more than a little desperate for an offer of marriage. Except… she wasn’t. The beautiful woman on his doorstep was anything but quiet, and when she stopped talking long enough to close her mouth, all he wanted to do was kiss her… and more. Did he think she was mad? Eloise Bridgerton couldn’t marry a man she had never met! But then she started thinking… and wondering… and before she knew it, she was in a hired carriage in the middle of the night, on her way to meet the man she hoped might be her perfect match. Except… he wasn’t. Her perfect husband wouldn’t be so moody and ill-mannered, and while Phillip was certainly handsome, he was a large brute of a man, rough and rugged, and totally unlike the London gentlemen vying for her hand. But when he smiled… and when he kissed her… the rest of the world simply fell away, and she couldn’t help but wonder… could this imperfect man be perfect for her?

So since I made it my mission to read all the Bridgerton books, it was now time for me to read book five ‘To Sir Philip, With Love’. This is Eloise Bridgerton’s story. And I was so curious to find out what her story would be. Eloise’s character is definitely very ‘modern’ for her era and I honestly couldn’t imagine how her story would go.

In ‘To Sir Philip, With Love’ we read about Eloise and Philip. They have been secretly writing letters to one another for over a year, when Philip asks her to marry him in his last letter. Although Eloise enjoys writing with the man, they have never met and after declining a lot of proposals over the years, Eloise isn’t going to accept a proposal without having met the man. No, Eloise is determined to find out herself if this ‘stranger’ is a good match for her and she makes a decision that leaves her family in shock.

Philip is in need of a wife. He has been widowed for some time now, and he really needs help raising his two children and taking care of his household. So the lovely woman he has been writing with for over a year seems perfect. But Eloise is unlike any other woman he has ever met. And from they meet in real life, his life is forever changed.

I definitely enjoyed reading ‘To Sir Philip, With Love’. I found this story to be rather original. Sure there are some predictable parts.. but mostly this book was unlike any other historical romance. Eloise is quite the feminist for her age.. and she isn’t used to staying quiet. I loved how she just grabbed her stuff and went to visit Philip so she could see for herself if he was good enough to be her husband. In her age normally a man would do that for her. I loved that.

The romance and chemistry in this book was also fun to read. It’s definitely a slow burn one.. but you could feel the connection between these two characters from the start.

And obviously, I loved how some of the other Bridgerton’s also appeared in this book. I just can’t get enough of these characters. And I can’t wait to start the next book.. since we know so much less about the last three Bridgerton characters I’m curious how there story will go.

Check out my reviews of the first four books in the Bridgerton series here:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn loves to dispel the myth that smart women don’t read (or write) romance, and and if you watch reruns of the game show The Weakest Link you might just catch her winning the $79,000 jackpot. She displayed a decided lack of knowledge about baseball, country music, and plush toys, but she is proud to say that she aced all things British and literary, answered all of her history and geography questions correctly, and knew that there was a Da Vinci long before there was a code. A graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges, Ms. Quinn is one of only sixteen members of Romance Writers of America’s Hall of Fame. Her books have been translated into 32 languages, and she lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest. The Bridgertons, her popular series of historical romance, is currently in production by Shondaland as a Netflix original series starring Julie Andrews, Phoebe Dynevor, and Rége-Jean Page.
