A little while ago I was thinking I really wanted to start reading more thrillers again. And like fate wanted to help me out, I saw a Tweet by Bookouture and took the opportunity to request ‘One Child Alive’ on Netgalley. Luckily, I got approved to read this book. Although this is book three in ...KEEP READING »

Naked in Death (In Death, #1)

Naked in Death (In Death, #1)

I’ve been reading books from the In Death series by J.D. Robb for a few years now. But I only started with book 39. And although these books can be read as standalones, I always wondered how the story of New York homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas and Roarke started. So.. since I’m on maternity leave, and find myself with more time to read I decided it was time to finally start reading book 1 in the series. And I was so excited when I opened my kindle to these pages.

In ‘Naked In Death’ we meet lieutenant Eve Dallas in the year 2058. Although Eve just finished a horrible case, there’s no time to waste when a young woman gets brutally murdered by a weapon that hasn’t been used in years. The victim also happens to be the granddaughter of a US senator, which makes the case all the more intense. And soon Eve finds out that there will be more murders if she doesn’t solve the case fast. Not only is Eve working hard to find out who killed the young woman, after meeting a possible suspect, the handsome and rich Roarke, she also has to fight her attraction to him. Because a relationship of any kind is definitely not for Eve.

What I’ve loved most about the In Death series is the combination of thrilling suspense, romance and futuristic aspects that fills every book in this series. And this book definitely is a great one in that. From the moment I started reading ‘Naked In Death’ I was hooked. The book starts right away, and it kept me sitting on the edge of my seat right from the start.

The suspense and mystery was very good. There is this brutal murder, and not a lot of suspects to go around. The suspects that are there, aren’t easy to confront. Think a US senator, a high guy in the police world and a billionaire. This definitely made for a very thrilling read I couldn’t put down.

Most of all I was excited to finally learn how the story of Eve and Roarke met. And boy did I love it. I love these two characters, and getting to know these two from the start was so exciting to me. Although I’m not a real sci-fi lover, I love the futuristic aspects in this book too. Things are definitely very different than our present time, but not so different that you couldn’t expect it to be real. I love that.

‘Naked In Death’ definitely was a great read that kept me guessing till the end. I devoured every page and am determined to read more books in this series this year.

What ‘Naked In Death’ also definitely did, was make me remember how much I love reading crime thrillers. I used to read that genre all the time, but in the last few years that changed to romance. I’m definitely now determined to read more books in this series.. but also in other books in this genre.

We Begin at the End

After reading a lot of romance novels lately, I was looking forward to reading something different. So ‘We Begin At The End’ came exactly at the right time. I read ‘Tall Oaks’ by Chris Whitaker in 2016, and enjoyed it, so I was excited to read this new book.

‘We Begin At The End’ is a thriller, mystery and you’ll get that right from the start. We read about Vincent King, a guy who became a murderer thirty years ago, and is now released back to society. To the little town he lived in, the town where he became a killer. We also meet Duchess Radley, the thirteen year old kid of Vincent’s high school girlfriend Star. Duchess does whatever it takes to take care of her mother Star and her little brother.

This book was definitely very different than the other books I read lately. And it took me a while to really get into this story. This book starts right in the middle of it. At least that was how it felt like. Vincent King is being released from jail, and right from the start there is something mysterious about him and the thing that made him a murderer all those years ago. Right from the start I found myself wondering and thinking what was really going on. We go from different point of views pretty quickly, and this definitely made this a book interesting but also a bit hard at times. ‘We Begin At The End’ really isn’t a book you can read while tired, because you’ll have to concentrate. I sure had to.

What I loved about this book was the fact that it kept you guessing and thinking right to the end. I kept wondering about what happened all those years ago and what would happen now. The way Chris Whitaker writes is definitely impressive. There is something raw and intense about his writing that makes his characters very real. The characters are flawed, like we all are, and nothing is perfect, the way life rarely is.

I can definitely see that ‘We Begin At The End’ is a thrilling and good written story. But it wasn’t my kind of story. I had trouble concentrating on it at times, and I found the girl Duchess very disturbing and hard to read about.

The Devil Aspect

A little while ago I was asked to read and review ‘The Devil Aspect’. Although I don’t often read Gothic Thrillers, this book sounded so fascinating and the cover looked so beautiful, I just couldn’t decline this review request. As a nurse working with the occasional psychiatric patients, this book definitely spoke to me, and I couldn’t wait to start reading.

‘The Devil Aspect’ is a thrilling, fascinating and cleverly written book that makes you want to keep reading. From the very first page it is clear that the author did an incredible job researching this book. ‘The Devil Aspect’ takes place in 1935 Czechoslovakia and it’s a great combination of history, combined with fiction. Reading about the main character Victor Kosirek, a psychiatrist who works in an asylum that houses six of the most treacherous killers was definitely something else. Although there were some moments inside this book that were a little slow, I mostly found myself wanting to read more.

On more than one occasion this book definitely freaked me out a bit. In a good way! I work as a nurse on a Trauma ward and see psychiatric patients a lot. I definitely don’t like working with patients that are schizophrenic or psychotic too much, but it is a part of my job and reading this book I found myself recognizing certain aspects the main character had to deal with. And it was definitely a little disturbing at times but definitely made me want to keep on reading.

‘The Devil Aspect’ keeps you hooked and wanting to read more to find out what is really going on. We go from following psychiatrist Victor, to following police investigator Lukas Smolak who is on the hunt to find a brutal serial killer. I could have gone without all the side info about these characters. Which made this read a little slow at some moments, but because the main part of this book is so fascinating you’ll find yourself wanting to keep on going.

Even though this book isn’t one I usually would read I must say I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It was thrilling and exciting and I loved the whole history part too. Especially since I’ve been to Prague too. As with a lot of great books that take place in cities I’ve been too, I could picture the main characters walking through the beautiful streets of Prague and it made this book even more fascinating to me.

If you are looking for a dark and scary, well written thriller with twists.. ‘The Devil Aspect’ is definitely for you.
