Review 'The Summer I Loved You' by J.L. Lora

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/40215263-the-summer-i-loved-you
He swore to never come back. She promised to hold him to his word.

After years of living the life his oppressive parents wanted for him, Cameron Blake is ready to pursue his dreams of being a reclusive artist. Pleasing the faithful baseball fans of the New York Emperors has been rewarding, but now all he wants is peace and quiet. That and an irreversible vasectomy. Because there’s no way he’s passing on the heavy burden of the Blake genes to an innocent child. But Cameron never gets what he wants. Ever.

The last thing Adrianna Arenas needs is for her ex to slide back into her life. Not when she can throw a nine-year-old curve ball that will change his game. Not when his father could tear her world apart with a simple phone call. Especially not when, despite everything that stands between them, her insides go wild when Cameron walks into a room. But Adri never gets to keep things the way she needs them. Ever.

After ten years, fate brings Cameron face-to-face with Adrianna, the woman he never forgot, and the little girl that ties them forever.

It all goes back to the secrets, jealousy, and heartache that destroyed the magical summer when they loved each other madly, broke each other’s hearts, and changed each other’s lives.

My Review:

I just love a good second chance romance story. So when I saw the sign up for ‘The Summer I Loved You’ it immediately sparked my interest. I read the book description and I just knew I wanted to read this book. So obviously I was super excited when I got an email approving me to read an ARC.

In ‘The Summer I Loved You’ we meet Cameron Blake and Adrianna Arenas. Cameron and Adrianna where madly in love with each other almost ten years ago. But a fight, made worse by their stubbornness and Cam’s oppressive parents made them lose contact. But they never truly forgot one another. Especially not Adrianna who has a nine year old daughter who has a resemblance to Cam and his brother and sister. So when Cameron and Adrianna meet almost ten years later they are surprised to find there’s still a lot of chemistry and passion between them.

‘The Summer I Loved You’ was from the very beginning a book I really enjoyed. It starts with a little throwback to ten years ago, the last summer Cameron and Adrianna spend together. Although you don’t know the complete story then, you can easily feel the love and chemistry between both characters and it made me want to keep on reading.

Both main characters Cameron and Adrianna are fun to get to know. They are both very passionate people and this makes for some intense moments. They both have strong characters that clash at times, and they are so crazy for one another that they make it harder for themselves than seems necessary. What I definitely loved about this book is the way it’s so clear that these two are meant to be together. The only real question was if they where able to forget the past and fight the people who wanted to do them harm.

This was my first J.L. Lora novel and I must say I really loved her writing. From the very beginning I was hooked to the pages, and I just wanted to know how the story would go. There is lots of romance, and some very sexy scenes but there is also suspense and some nail-biting moments. There’s definitely enough going on in this book.

I did find myself a little bit disappointed about the ending. It all went so fast and I still felt like there were some lose ends. But since this book is the first in a series, I hope to get more answers in the next books. And boy do I hope the next book is about Cam’s brother or sister. It definitely felt like they had a story to tell as well.

Review 'A Discovery of Witches' by Deborah Harkness

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10459837-a-discovery-of-witches
A world of witches, daemons and vampires. A manuscript which holds the secrets of their past and the key to their future. Diana and Matthew - the forbidden love at the heart of it.

When historian Diana Bishop opens an alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, it's an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordered life. Though Diana is a witch of impeccable lineage, the violent death of her parents while she was still a child convinced her that human fear is more potent than any witchcraft. Now Diana has unwittingly exposed herself to a world she's kept at bay for years; one of powerful witches, creative, destructive daemons and long-lived vampires. Sensing the significance of Diana's discovery, the creatures gather in Oxford, among them the enigmatic Matthew Clairmont, a vampire geneticist. Diana is inexplicably drawn to Matthew and, in a shadowy world of half-truths and old enmities, ties herself to him without fully understanding the ancient line they are crossing. As they begin to unlock the secrets of the manuscript and their feelings for each other deepen, so the fragile balance of peace unravels…

My Review:

I’ve read ‘A Discovery of Witches’ for the first time in 2013. I loved it right away and I can remember staying up till late just so I could finish it. When I saw the trailer of the tv show of ‘A Discovery of Witches’ a view weeks ago I knew I just had to read that book again. I remembered some stuff about this book, but I didn’t everything and I just had to re-read it. So I did.

In ‘A Discovery of Witches’ we meet Diana Bishop a historian who always worked hard to just be ‘normal’. And Diana succeeded in that, until one day she accidentally comes across an alchemical manuscript filled with magic. At first Diana didn’t think a lot of it.. but soon the library she uses for her work gets fuller and fuller with creatures demons, witches and vampires watching her. Including Matthew Clairmont, a handsome and mysterious vampire. Soon Diana finds out that she can’t ignore her own magic and especially Matthew anymore. And her life changes forever.

Just as the first time I read this book, I really enjoyed getting lost in these pages. ‘A Discovery of Witches’ is a book unlike any other I read. There is romance, suspense and a lot of history in these pages. This is not a book you read without keeping your head with it. But fortunately the way Deborah Harkness writes, makes you sitting on the edge of your seat, not able to put the book down.  I didn’t really follow everything, especially the alchemist stuff.. but overall this book is just very good and makes me want to read more.

The romance between Diana and Matthew is very nice to read about. Matthew is very strong and dominant, and Diana is tough and used to taking care of herself. Diana and Matthew bump heads a lot, especially in the beginning. But it makes there love story even better and I couldn’t stop reading, even though I already knew what was happening.

‘A Discovery of Witches’ is definitely a great book that makes you want to start reading the next book in the series as soon as possible. There is so much you’d still want answers too after reading this book. There are so many questions still on answered.. I definitely need to re-read the second book soon to. And I can’t wait to see the tv show.

About the Author:

My life has been a series of left turns that nevertheless took me in the right direction (though it didn't always seem so at the time). I went to college to be a theater major and ended up studying the Renaissance. I went to grad school to become a college administrator and loved to teach so much I became a college professor instead. I thought I wanted to be a Tudor-Stuart historian, and found myself a historian of science. I started blogging because a friend needed help on a project in 2006 and am still blogging about wine today. I started writing a novel in the fall of 2008, and it became a New York Times Bestseller in February 2011: A Discovery of Witches. The second volume in the All Souls Trilogy, Shadow of Night, came out in July 2012 and debuted at #1 on the New York Times Bestseller's List, as did the final volume The Book of Life. I haven't managed to escape the world of All Souls, however. A companion book (May 2018) and a book about Marcus are on their way (Time’s Convert, September 2018).

My Favorite.. Thing To Do First Thing In The Morning

Well.. I haven’t been able to do my favorite thing in the morning for months now. My mornings when I have to work are usually very busy. I have only 30 till sometimes 45 minutes to get ready and leave the house around 06.30 a.m. I used to be able to get up earlier in the morning though. I woke up around 5 a.m. went out of bed and started the computer so I could do some blogging. But ever since my pregnancy I’m not able to get up any earlier than I have too. Especially since I’m not sleeping that much during the night.

But my favorite thing to do, except for saying good morning to my husband off course, is browsing through my blog with a nice cup of coffee in front of me. Somehow I’m always so much more productive in the mornings. And although I don’t miss the early mornings, I definitely do miss my early blogging time. Who knows, maybe I’ll get them back when our baby girl is born! (Yes, I know that is a long shot! LOL!!)

What is your favorite thing to do first thing in the morning?

My Review:

I definitely love a good cowboy story. So when I saw the cover of ‘All-American Cowboy’ on Netgalley, I just had to request this read. And I was super excited to find out I got accepted and I started reading as soon as possible.

‘All-American Cowboy’ is the first book in the Holiday, Texas series and I must admit I had some high expectations for this one. Having to take it easy due to my pregnancy, makes me able to read a little more than I did the previous weeks so I was really looking forward to a great romance story to take my mind of things.

The main character Charlie Walker is a tough as nails woman who has been working hard for eight years to make the old Honky Tonk the Rose a success. When the owner dies, Charlie is forced to play nice with his grandson Beck to make sure the Rose will survive. But Beck definitely isn’t from Texas, and he isn’t used to living outside his fancy Manhattan life.

This book has all the things a great read should have. Cowboys, Romance, a strong female character and a small town. But I just didn’t really like this book. I didn’t hate it either, but I just didn’t love the characters. Somehow I really did not feel the romance between Charlie and Beck. One thing I didn’t like for example.. Charlie didn’t want to admit here feelings for Beck, so she stayed away and was pretty unkind to Beck. And when I turned the page she started kissing him and said she wanted to have ‘fun’. This just didn’t really felt right to me.

There where some pretty funny moments throughout this read. Which made me want to keep on reading. Especially those moments with a huge pig. Yep.. a pig. I loved that.

What I did enjoy about this read was the little town of Holiday. I love small towns and this town really had his charms.

My Review:

It had been a while since I last listened to an audiobook. I already planned on starting listening to them again with my maternity leave coming up. And I was thinking it would be perfect to listen to more audiobooks when our baby girl is born. So when I saw a sign up to become a part of the Caffeinated PR Audiobook service it felt like destiny. Soon after signing up the sign up for ‘Let Me Love You’ came along and I was super excited when I received the email which allowed me to start listening right away.

In ‘Let Me Love You’ we meet Stacy Williams, a recently divorced thirty one year old. Stacy’s divorce has done a number on her. Her husband had an affair with a younger woman and has gotten her pregnant. Stacy wanted to start a family for years but her husband always said it wasn’t the right time. Now heartbroken she is slowly getting back on her feet. When her neighbors handsome twenty three year old son Ren Haynes moves back after finishing college she is surprised to find he is interested in more than just friendship with her. Ren has been in love with Stacy for years, and now she is divorced he is determined to make her see he is the one for her.

After I started ‘Let Me Love You’ I had my reservations about this story. I don’t really like stories that got a lot of sex in it right from the beginning. I don’t mind sex in a book at all, but there has to be romance for me to enjoy reading or listening to it. And in the beginning of this book I missed the romance. Sure I got that Ren was in love with Stacy. But Stacy’s attraction to Ren kind of felt like coming out of the blue. I also thought the whole age difference of eight years was not so much, but maybe that’s just me. Thankfully I kept going and started enjoying this book more and more. The connection between Stacy and Ren started to develop and I enjoyed listening to Ren’s pursued of Stacy. It was especially fun to read how Ren was determined to show Stacy how serious he was about them. And the way he faced his aggravating mother was pretty good.

This audiobook isn’t very long, which is a shame because I loved the two narrators Joe Arden and Samantha Cook. They definitely did a great job in narrating this book. I enjoyed listening to Samantha’s voice, but above all I loved listening to Joe Arden. His voice is just so nice to listen too and it made me want to keep on listening till the very end.

Overall this was a nice audiobook and the perfect one to get me back in the audiobook scene. It wasn’t perfect, but definitely made for a fun listen.

My Favorite.. Summer Time Memory

I love summer time. Especially when the weather is also the way it’s supposed to be during the summer.. Sunny and warm. I just love spending evenings outside, being able to walk outside without having to get a coat, sitting on a terrace with my husband, or friends and family. And obviously going on vacation.

I have a lot of summer time memories of going on vacation and having the best time. Starting when I was young and went to Switzerland every summer. But if I have to pick one.. I’ll choose my summer time memory of last summer.. it was the early summer but it was our summer vacation and our honeymoon. And boy did we have a good time.

For our honeymoon last year we went to Lanzarote. And we stayed in this very luxurious home, with our own pool and two bathrooms. We went out to lunch and dinner every day. We drank cocktails, went sightseeing and I read. It was just perfect. The perfect summer time memory!

What is your favorite summer time memory?

I love watching movies and there was a time when I went to the cinema often to see the newest ones. I don’t do that anymore but I still try to watch a lot of movies. And musical movies are my favorite! My husband really doesn’t like musical movies, so once in a while he sacrifices himself and watches one with me.

There are so many great once I love that it’s hard to pick just one favorite.. I love Moulin Rouge, Grease, Bride & Prejudice etc. The latest one  I saw and I’ll just have to pick as my favorite this time is: The Greatest Showman. What a great movie is that, and those songs!! Wow!!

I was relatively late with watching this one, so I only saw it a view weeks ago for the first time but I’m hooked. And that song between Zac Efron and Zendaya.. Love it!!
