Review 'Secrets in Death' by J.D. Robb
A new novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling series: Lt. Eve Dallas must separate rumors from reality when a woman who traffics in other people’s secrets is silenced.

The chic Manhattan nightspot Du Vin is not the kind of place Eve Dallas would usually patronize, and it’s not the kind of bar where a lot of blood gets spilled. But that’s exactly what happens one cold February evening.

The mortally wounded woman is Larinda Mars, a self-described “social information reporter,” or as most people would call it, a professional gossip. As it turns out, she was keeping the most shocking stories quiet, for profitable use in her side business as a blackmailer. Setting her sights on rich, prominent marks, she’d find out what they most wanted to keep hidden and then bleed them dry. Now someone’s done the same to her, literally—with a knife to the brachial artery.

Eve didn’t like Larinda Mars. But she likes murder even less. To find justice for this victim, she’ll have to plunge into the dirty little secrets of all the people Larinda Mars victimized herself. But along the way, she may be exposed to some information she really didn’t want to know…

My Review:

I love every book by J.D. Robb I’ve ever read. The In Death series is definitely one series I look forward to reading every single book from. So when ‘Secrets in Death’ arrived in my mail box I was super excited to start reading.

In the new J.D. Robb book Lieutenant Eve Dallas witnessed a murder herself when she is having a drink with a colleague. Yes, definitely something new! The victim is Larinda Mars, a ‘gossip’ reporter who many people disliked. The list of suspects gets very long, and Eve soon finds out there is a lot about Larinda Mars the public didn’t know. And Eve’s husband Roarke’s expertise in technology and safes come in hand with this case. What a fascinating guy!

‘Secrets in Death’ is already the 45th book in the series. And I definitely enjoyed reading about Eve Dallas again. I love how she really gets into her work, and takes no crap from anyone. This book started very good. I loved how Eve herself was now a witness to a murder. It was something else, and definitely unexpected. And for a long time I really didn’t see who would have murdered Larinda Mars. Almost everyone disliked her, even Eve, and I could have easily seen a lot of people murdering her.. But right in the middle of a busy bar?

To be honest, I didn’t really liked how this book ended. It felt a little rushed to me. There wasn’t a real suspect, and bam Eve knew who was the murderer and the book ended. I would have liked to see a little more real detective work. And I also missed Peabody in this book. She really didn’t have much a role in this one.

But, just like with all the In Death books, I really like that we get to read all those details of a case. In most crime novels, we don’t read about every single thing the Lieutenant or Inspector thinks. But in these book we really get in sight Eve Dallas’s head. I really loved that, and it almost makes me feel like I really know her. Definitely a bravo to the author.

Overall it was another good In Death book. But I liked the previous one more.
