Wednesday's Favorites: The Find by Gregg Bell

Welcome to Maureen's Books Wednesday's Favorites. In the Wednesday's Favorites post I will talk about a book I loved and that I think deserves a little more attention. I read popular books, but also many books that aren’t so popular (yet). In this post all sorts of books from all sorts of genre’s will have a chance to shine. Today’s Wednesday's Favorites is 'The Find' by Gregg Bell, a book I read in April 2014.

The Book:
She found a watch. A monster found a plaything.

Looking for love is the last thing on single mother Phoebe Jackson's mind. She's desperate to find a way to make enough money to help her sick child and will do anything to save her. Finding an

Unbeknownst to her, the watch belongs to the mobster Michael "Fingertips" Contini. Within days Contini discovers she took the watch and confronts her, and soon Phoebe's lured into his world of wealth and power, and finds much much more than she was looking for...

Former cop Brent Greer, Phoebe's ex-husband's best friend, knows Contini's history all too well and knows that Phoebe is blind to how much danger she's really in. Her problems may be none of his business, but he can't stand by and watch her fall in deeper. Extricating her from the vicious gangster is harder every day she spends with him—yet if Brent can't convince Phoebe to get out, a deadly end can't be far off.
expensive bejeweled watch is just the lucky break she needs, and her need to save her child overwhelms her ethics and she decides to take it.

 Praise for 'The Find':

Gregg Bell has created a very interesting novel, one that will get your attention and keep it. For those of you who enjoy action, this book has plenty.

I was impressed with this read. There was some predictability in it but also a thrilling mystery because you really couldn’t pinpoint who the bad guy was for the first half of the book. All in all, I really enjoyed this fantastic read!

I really was pleasantly surprised by ‘The Find’. Last night I just had to find out how this book would end so I read till late at night, just to finish this book. That is definitely something ‘The Find’ will make you do. Gregg Bell’s writing pulls you in and you just have to finish it.

About the Author:

‘When I was ten a drunken guy almost drowned me in a swimming pool. It was in Miami Beach at
the Chateau motel. The guy was a pool hand and he was wrestling (playfully, for the most part)with us kids. Then he said, "I'm going to show you a good hold" and he got me in a headlock and took me under. It was a good hold all right. He held me there and held me there and held me there. I struggled but this was a powerful man. There was nothing to do. I would either die or I wouldn't.

That experience gave me an appreciation for life's tenuousness. If you think about it, we're only alive as far as our next breath will take us.
So I write novels and stories about characters like you and me with their heads underwater. (Figuratively speaking of course.) Characters under so much duress their brains are about to burst. They're at the end of it all. No way out of this one. But I also write with a sense of humor. (You have to have a sense of humor, right?)

I was born in 1956 in Chicago. A lifelong Illinois guy. Married once. Divorced. No kids. No pets. Passionate about things: people, classical music, golf. And I always seem to be on the side of the underdog.’ – Gregg Bell
