Mother's Day Event with Maria Faulconer

Today I'm so pleased to take part in a very special event celebrating Maria Faulconer's touching picture book, ‘A Mom For Umande’, and mothers everywhere. Not only is this post about her beautiful book but there’s also a special post I written about my mom. I hope you guys enjoy it ;)

About the Book: heart-tugging true story of how a baby gorilla found love in the arms of a surrogate mom.

When Umande was born, his mother didn’t know how to take care of him. So, he was hand-reared by keepers at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs. For eight months, the keepers crawled on the ground with him to show him how to walk; coughed in his face to teach him discipline; and gave him happy gorilla grumbles to encourage him. But for Umande, something was still missing. Luckily, a thousand miles away at the Columbus Zoo, a mom was waiting just for him.

This touching true story about finding a family will resonate with animal lovers and adoptive families alike.

Illustrated by Susan Kathleen Hartung.

About my Mom:

My mom and I have been with just the two of us for a long time. We went through some terrible times together. Just like many other teens, I wasn’t an easy teenager, I was hurt and sad and I did things I’m not proud of. But my mom was always there for me.
My mom is my best friend. She knows everything about me. She is the person I call when I need some advice or just need someone to talk to. She is the person I can talk to about everything and anything.

My mom has always been a strong woman, but when life kicks you down so hard.. It’s hard to find that happiness again. But my mom never gave up. Over the years she became my rock, and I remember the day I left home to life together with my boyfriend very well. I was excited to life with my boyfriend, but I felt so sad to leave my mother alone. But she was standing there, very strong and telling me I shouldn’t worry about her and that I would be happy. That’s my mom’s biggest power. She always knows what to say when I doubt myself, when I cry, when I feel like I’m all alone. She filled our home with books and love. And our home always felt like a safe place.

Dear mom, you made me the woman I am today. You taught me how to enjoy books.  You forced (LOL) me to go on a date with the man of my dreams, because I was too scared to go. You inspired me to keep dreaming and never give up. You made me hold on when I didn’t know how anymore. And above all you showed me how to love.

So dear mom, I don’t tell it as much as I should, but I love you and I’m proud to be your daughter!!
