Book Bloggers Talk: Nikita Johri

Today I’m really excited to have another Book Bloggers Talk with blogger Nikita Johri. Nikita is the owner of the blog Njkinny’s World of Books & Stuff and of the book promotions company Njkinny Tours & Promotions. In the last couple of months I’ve been participating in a view of Nikita’s tours and promotions and she is really a very nice person. So let’s get to know more about Nikita Johri!

The Talk:

Tell me a little more about yourself?

This is such a difficult question to answer. Well, My name is Nikita. I  am a software engineer by qualification and a Blogger by passion. I love reading, writing, cooking and gardening. Always dreaming and a bit lazy, you can find me lounged on a chair in my favourite spot in my garden with either a book or indulged in plotting storylines for books that I wish to write.
I live in India and have resided all over the country. I love visiting new places and am fascinated by the history of the place and the mysteries that it holds!
To satisfy my creative urges, I started my blog Njkinny's World of Books & Stuff where I talk of books, movies, TV, products, my articles, short stories, beauty secrets, my love for gadgets and almost any and everything that has in some way motivated me to share my views with my readers. :)

I recently learned that both my blogs Njkinny's World of Books & Stuff and Njkinny Tours & Promotions are nominated for the #Win15 Blogger awards. Show your love to my blogs by rating them. Drop by the blogs, Give stars to them by clicking under "Love my Blog? Then Rate it!" title on the sidebars on the blogs. Thanks!

When did you learn about your passion for books?

I don’t remember exactly when I started loving books but my passion goes as far as I can remember. My family gives importance to overall learning and so my parents introduced me to good literature right from the start. I started by listening to my mother's and grandmother's stories with a moral lesson at the end and then before I knew it, I was reciprocating by reading books and then narrating them the stories that I had read. LOL

I used to borrow my non-reading fanatic friends' library cards in school so I could get more books to read from the library apart from the ones I was already getting through my card! Many of my after school afternoons were spent lost between the pages of books that took me to different places all across the globe and to different times without even having to set foot outside. My love for books enriched my childhood and is still enriching my life!

Which book was your childhood favorite?

Naming one favourite is very difficult. I loved reading Malgudi Days by RK Narayan, books by Ruskin Bond, Enid Blyton's mysteries, Arthur Conan Doyle' intense mysteries along with Agatha Christie's memorable mysteries had me aspiring to become a detective, Premchand's family stories taught me a lot about people and classics like the Railway Children, Secret Garden along with the fairy tales had me wishing for happily-ever-afters for everyone with a healthy sprinkling of magic!

I was ecstatic when I managed to get my favourite book by Ruskin Bond autographed  recently when I visited Mussourie on holiday. It was a memorable and truly awe inspiring experience meeting the author who has inspired me since childhood. :)

Which book (or books) is your favorite right now?

I can’t say that I have one or two favourites. I have been fortunate to read some great books recently and discovered some really talented authors. I recently read the first book in the Psy-Changeling series by Nalini Singh and was impressed by her meticulous world building there.

What’s your favorite book genre?

Mystery. I just love a good brain teasing mystery which exercises all my "little grey cells". Romance is my second favourite but mystery wins everytime. :)

Do you prefer paperbacks or eBooks? And why?

I don’t have a preference here. I love the smell and feel of paperbacks and they give me satisfaction when I see them sitting beautifully on my book shelves but ebooks are easy to carry, less space consuming and with kindle books it is easy to highlight the quotes I love, see the meaning of any word by using the inbuilt dictionary and save my notes.

How many books do you read in a week?

I never counted but being a quick reader I can read any number as long as the books interest me and I have time.

If you could live inside one book world, which world would it be?

I would love to visit Harry Potter's world, maybe enroll in Hogwarts. It would be so exciting riding in the Hogwarts Express, shopping in Diagon Alley, using magic, having a wand and riding a broomstick!

When did you decide to become a book blogger? And when did you start your book blog?

I love talking books and unfortunately, no one around me read those same books so my friends suggested that I start a blog where I could share my thoughts with other book lovers. Fearing that no one would visit and thinking of possible reasons I could think of that would encourage me, I started my blog at the end of May in 2013. My husband, my family and my friends played an important role in keeping me encouraged and slowly but steadily I met new authors, bloggers, readers and was blessed with lasting friendships. :)

What do you love most about book blogging?

Meeting new books, authors, publishers and people associated with the book community, exploring new genres and then discussing books is what I love most about book blogging. New friends are also made in the process and having people loving and sharing thoughts on the same books that I am reading is such a satisfactory and beautiful experience.

If you could change one thing in the book blogging community what would it be?

I have only got love and motivation from the book blogging community and don’t have any area where I want a change. The book blogging community is evolving and improving everyday which is a happy thing and I hope we keep caring, sharing and supporting each other in the future too.

How do you plan your time for your blog? And how much time do you spend on your blog?

I am bad at planning so I usually go with the flow which is becoming difficult now that my blog is gaining some popularity. I hope to plan better and have decided to schedule my posts in advance and keep track of my mails better but until now all I have managed to improve about my blogging style is the scheduling. My mails are still jam packed and are still managing to give me the jitters thinking about scheduling them. LOL
But I hope to work on this. Please pray that I am successful. {wink}

You’re not only a book blogger, but you also have your own book promotion business. Did you always know that you wanted to start that business? And how did you get the word out for authors to find you?

The book promotion service started unexpectedly when a few author friends for whom I did some promotions, suggested that I start a proper service. They were very impressed with my work and even gave me my first payment! :)
I had never thought anything of this sort. I didn't do anything to get the word out. I was blessed with supportive blogger friends, helpful authors and it is there word or mouth that has helped me get work. I take on very select tours and usually have more work than I ever hoped for. :)

You’re from India, how is the reading community there? Is reading popular and is it encouraged?

We, Indians love reading. Overall development is encouraged which includes reading quality literature both in school and at home but it is basically your interest that guarantees whether you will grow up to love reading or not. The reading community here is very diverse. We have so much from regional literature to national literature to international literature to read. Sporting some very classy and historic libraries, reading is more of a lifestyle that a hobby in India.

Some book bloggers out there are also inspiring writers. Do you also write?

Yes, I write. I write small stories and share on my blog and hope to publish a full-fledged novel one day.

What would you advise be for beginning book bloggers?

Just be yourself. Be original and when you share your passion for books, readers are sure to notice you. Be sure to drop by, follow and comment on other blogs that you like. When you show your support to others, others will also come back to notice and follow your blog. I try and network with blogs, readers and authors and it pays off. I have made some very good friends over the span I have been running my blogs and have also increased my following.
